Corning secured enormous fiber commitments tied to the unending data center crawl. The street saw green. Shares spiked.

The market thinks these announcements validate the long-term hardware roadmap. They actually signal desperation.

The Warrant Illusion

First, decode the financing mechanism. When a hyperscaler like Amazon hands a chip vendor a massive contract projection—say, up to $60 billion—while simultaneously taking billions in equity warrants, you are not looking at a standard customer-supplier relationship. You are looking at a subsidized risk-sharing agreement.

Imagine a scenario where a major cloud provider agrees to buy your hardware only if you give them equity incentives to offset their capex risk. That is not organic demand. That is financial engineering designed to prop up valuation multiples in a slowing macro environment.

Qualcomm needs a story away from handsets. Amazon needs custom inference alternatives to squeeze margins away from dominant accelerators. The headline number is a ceiling, not a guaranteed floor.
